It doesn’t matter if you have been in a minor car accident, run out of gas or have a dead car battery, when you find yourself waiting for a tow truck, it is important you keep yourself and your passengers safe. When you break down on the side of the road, it can be nerve wrecking and stressful which can leave people making choices that they normally wouldn’t make. JW Wrecker & Towing is here to share some tips that will help keep you safe while you are on the side of the road, waiting for a tow truck.

Pulling Over in a Safe Place

Hopefully you have enough juice in your vehicle to get off the road while waiting for the towing company to respond to your call. It is important that you get over as far as humanly possible to ensure you aren’t a victim to a serious accident while you wait for the tow truck. Avoid waiting on a hill or a blind corner as these can be unsafe areas to wait.

Make Yourself Visible when Broken Down

Sometimes, drivers have a roadside kit in their vehicle that can help out when you find yourself broken down. Making yourself visible to other drivers on the road will go far in your safety. At the very least, you should have your hazard lights on and blinking so that other drivers know that they should drive carefully to avoid hitting your vehicle.

Stay in Car While You Wait for Roadside Assistance

In most cases, you will find that you are far safer in your vehicle than anywhere else while you wait for a tow truck. You should keep your seatbelt on as well. If you don’t have any passengers in the vehicle, it may be wise to sit in the passenger’s side seat if you weren’t able to get far off the road. In a situation where your car is smoking, you may be safer outside the vehicle, but most of the time, you are safer inside. If you do find that you have to leave your car, don’t leave anything behind. You should make sure you grab all of your belongings that include your photo ID, insurance information, purse or wallet and any other important documents that you have in your vehicle.

Don’t Get a Ride from a Stanger

Gone are the days where it’s safe to accept a ride from someone that you don’t know. You are far better off keeping to yourself and not putting yourself in danger. Don’t ask for a ride from someone you don’t know; don’t talk to pedestrians or motorists that are passing by.
